Seth Godin posted a news clipping (inside Triiibes.com) about Jodee Berry of Panama City, Florida. Jodee is a former Hooters waitress who has sued the restaurant where she once worked. It seems she won a beer sales contest, and thought the prize was a new Toyota car. When it came time to claim her prize, she was led to the parking lot and given a toy Yoda instead.
This reminded me of a sales contest held at a company I worked for 20 years ago. The sales people were told that they would get a prize for whoever sold the most outplacement services (help for people who have been laid off). The woman in charge was dubbed Miss Piggy (I don't remember why: it was part of the "theme" somehow). The sales people killed themselves trying to win the contest. They worked days, nights, and weekends. There was lots of speculation about what the prize might be...a car, a vacation, cash.
Well the big day finally came, and the prize turned out to be...a ham.
Judy’s post (How long does it take to form a tribe) demonstrated how tribes can form in a few seconds. It also takes only a few seconds to destroy them. Nurture your tribe and keep it growing.
